RVICS Team Arrives at Missionary TECH Team
March, 2004
Beginning the weekend of Friday, March 5th, a team
of five RVIC families began to arrive at Missionary TECH Team.
These five families come from as faraway as Canada!
Roving Volunteers in Christ’s
Service – RVICS – “RVICS are retired Christian couples living in
travel trailers or motorhomes who are serving the Lord through an
organized work ministry. RVICS are basically a maintenance and
service organization, but also do small construction projects. They
endeavor to serve only non-profit fundamental Christian colleges,
schools, camps, conference grounds, etc. There are no labor charges
for these services.” Couples plan to commit to a minimum of three
months of service. Men are required to work six hours per day – three
and a half days a week (21 hours) and women are required to work three
hours per day – four days per week (12 hours). There are several
groups across the U.S. that allow one member of the couple to work if
the spouse is unable to work full time. RVICS can be contacted
at: RVICS International Headquarters,
1800 S.E. Fourth St., Smithville, TX 78957, Phone:
800-727-8914."
One of the primary projects that this
'team of ten' will be working on for TECH is the preparation of our
newly acquired 'Intern House'. Since TECH's inception in 1969,
we have wrestled with the best way to involve short-term workers
through the year. This was especially true if they did not have the
adequate technical experience that would enable
them to be productive rather than primarily needing on-the-job
training. An additional prayer focus has been in effective recruiting
of qualified fulltime missionaries.
Three years ago a new effort was launched at TECH to address both of
these challenges. The Lord directed us to initiate a Mission Intern
program specifically designed to accept students, or others having
adequate experience, who would gain from real life practical
experience in their respective skill discipline. It was believed that
this might well accomplish two goals: 1) expand our production
capabilities, and 2) offer an opportunity to expose and, by God's
grace, instill a burden for fulltime missionary service in those whom
the Lord sent our way.
Now, after three summers of such effort, we are firmly convinced of
God's hand of direction in this effort. This past summer we had eight
young people qualifying for the Mission Intern program for which TECH
provides housing only.
The ability to provide adequate housing facilities was maxed out this
past summer. Early signs indicate that we could have an increased
number of Interns this coming summer of 2004. The photo above is of a
house that became available to TECH at $9,000 below the appraisal
district figure. We were able to purchase the 1,300 square foot, three
bedroom, two-bath home and two lots for $30,000. We estimate it will
take approximately $6,200 to put in HVAC, to do some repairs and
provide some furnishings.
As a result of the RVICS ministry, the cost and time to prepare this
house for 2004's summer interns will be greatly reduced. We are
overjoyed at our Lord's provision of this team and His perfect timing
for their arrival.
